The ISTQB Certified Tester Advanced Level Test Analyst (CTAL-TA) v4.0 exam gives you 45 questions worth 78 points, and you need 51 points to pass — 65.4% — in 120 minutes, or 150 minutes in a language that is not your native one. The formal prerequisite is a valid ISTQB Foundation Level certificate. The syllabus was released on 2 May 2025, runs to 77 pages and has five examinable chapters. One of them, Test Analysis and Test Design, carries 42 of the 78 points on its own, and that single fact should shape how you prepare.

45 questions, 78 points, 51 to pass (65.4%); 120 minutes, or 150 with the standard ISTQB 25% allowance for non-native speakers.
Weighted scoring: K2 = 1 point, K3 = 2, K4 = 3. The mix is 18 K2, 21 K3 and 6 K4 questions.
No K1 learning objectives exist at Advanced Level. Keywords stay examinable at K1 inside the K2 and higher questions.
Prerequisite: CTFL. The syllabus recommends a minimal background such as six months as a system or acceptance tester or as a developer, but names no minimum number of years.

Delivery format, fees and re-sit rules are set by your ISTQB member board or exam provider rather than centrally. Foundation, Specialist and Advanced certificates do not expire.
Not every correct answer earns the same. Eighteen K2, 21 K3 and 6 K4 questions at 1, 2 and 3 points is 18 + 42 + 18 = 78, so 27 of the 45 questions carry 60 of the 78 points. Counting questions answered tells you little about whether you passed.
That changes the trades you make under time pressure. Abandoning one hard applied question in order to bank three quick definition questions feels productive and is not: three K2 answers are worth 3 points, and the K4 question you skipped was worth 3 on its own.
Timing follows the same weighting. The syllabus budget is 1 minute for a K2 question, 3 for a K3 and 4 for a K4, which is 105 minutes against the 120 you get. Spend the 15 minutes of slack on the six K4 questions, not on re-reading definitions.
K1 is recall and K2 is understanding. K3 is application: given a specification, a state model or a set of rules, you produce the test cases. K4 is analysis: you take a situation apart, weigh options and justify a choice.
A result that is strong on K2 and weak on K3 has a precise meaning — you know the definitions and cannot yet run the techniques. On this exam that is close to fatal, because the 21 K3 questions are worth 42 points between them. A weak K4 score is narrower and points at three learning objectives: TA-2.2.1 on risk control, TA-3.5.1 on choosing the most appropriate technique, and TA-5.3.1 on stopping defects recurring. Read this as a running total against the 51 points you need. The target is what we would aim for to leave a working margin.
The Tasks of the Test Analyst in the Test Process — 8 questions, 9 points, 11.5% of the marks (7 K2, 1 K3). Target 7. Cumulative: 9 of 78.
The Tasks of the Test Analyst in Risk-Based Testing — 3 questions, 7 points, 9.0% (1 K2, 2 K4). Two of the three are K4, so one answer here is worth three Chapter 4 answers. Target 4. Cumulative: 16 of 78.
Test Analysis and Test Design — 22 questions, 42 points, 53.8% (4 K2, 16 K3, 2 K4). Target 32. Cumulative: 58 of 78, the first point at which 51 becomes reachable at all.
Testing Quality Characteristics — 4 questions, 4 points, 5.1%, all K2. The cheapest marks on the paper. Target 4. Cumulative: 62 of 78.
Software Defect Prevention — 8 questions, 16 points, 20.5% (2 K2, 4 K3, 2 K4). Quietly the second-biggest chapter by marks. Target 11. Cumulative: 78 of 78.
Those targets total 58, seven clear of the pass mark. The blunt version is worth memorising: Chapters 1, 2, 4 and 5 are worth 36 points combined, so a perfect score in all four still leaves you needing 15 of Chapter 3's 42 points. The training budget agrees — 615 of the 1,215 minutes are Chapter 3.
Read Chapter 1 once for framing. It defines what the Test Analyst owns: business-facing testing, functional suitability and the user-facing quality characteristics, black-box and experience-based work rather than white-box.
Spend about half your study time on Chapter 3, split by technique family: data-based (domain, combinatorial, random), behavior-based (CRUD, state transition, scenario-based), rule-based (decision table, metamorphic), experience-based, then technique selection.
Work Chapter 3 with a pen rather than by re-reading. Derive ON, OFF, IN and OUT points for a two-variable domain; build a state model and write the 0-switch and 1-switch cases; minimise a decision table and run the checksum procedure over it. Sixteen of its 22 questions are K3.
Give Chapter 5 second priority — 16 points for 8 questions. Defect removal efficiency and phase containment effectiveness, the five review techniques, root cause analysis, and the ODC and IEEE 1044 classifications.
Treat Chapter 2 as small and expensive. Expect to weigh options rather than recite them: risk analysis against risk control, the assessment factors, and impact analysis as the basis for selecting regression tests.
Do Chapter 4 last and fast. Four K2 marks that turn on ISO/IEC 25010 (2023) naming and on which characteristics belong to this role at all.
Sit at least two full mocks at 120 minutes without notes before you book, and use each chapter breakdown to aim the next study block.
Treating Chapter 3 as Foundation techniques revisited. The v4.0 grouping into data-based, behavior-based and rule-based techniques is how the questions are framed.
Naming a technique where the question asks you to apply it — the most common way to lose 2 points at a time.
Confusing simplified with reliable domain coverage. The reliable criterion adds IN and OUT points, and questions are built on that difference.
Mixing up 0-switch and 1-switch coverage, or forgetting round-trip coverage, in state transition questions.
Leaving a decision table unminimised, or missing don't-care entries and infeasible rules. The checksum procedure exists to expose gaps and overlaps.
Claiming coexistence or replaceability for the Test Analyst. This role owns adaptability, installability and interoperability; the other two sit elsewhere.
Reading a failed test as proof of a defect in Chapter 5 questions. False positives and test gap analysis are part of the analysis the syllabus expects.
Spreading 120 minutes evenly across 45 questions when the syllabus says a K4 question needs four times as long as a K2.
