Certified Tester Advanced Level Test Analyst (CTAL-TA v4.0) — Chapter 3: Test Analysis and Test Design

Chapter 3 is the CTAL-TA exam. It supplies 22 of the 45 questions and 42 of the 78 points — 49% of the questions and 54% of the marks — and the syllabus backs that up with 615 of its 1,215 accredited training minutes. Because the other four chapters are worth 36 points combined and the pass mark is 51, you need at least 15 points from this chapter no matter how well the rest of the paper goes.

Version 4.0 reorganised black-box techniques into three families, and questions are asked in those terms. Data-based techniques cover domain testing (closed and open borders, ON, OFF, IN and OUT points, and the difference between simplified and reliable domain coverage), combinatorial testing (base choice and pairwise coverage, classification trees, constraints) and random testing including adaptive random testing and operational profiles. Behavior-based techniques cover CRUD testing, state transition testing with N-switch and round-trip coverage, and scenario-based testing built on use cases, activity diagrams and simple loop coverage. Rule-based techniques cover decision tables — full and minimised, don't-care entries, infeasible rules, the checksum procedure — and metamorphic testing with its source and follow-up test cases. Experience-based testing adds test charters, checklists and crowd testing, and the chapter closes with choosing and combining techniques, which is where the K4 objective TA-3.5.1 sits.

Sixteen of the 22 questions are K3, so the exam asks you to derive test cases, not to name the technique that would derive them. That difference is the single most common reason candidates who have read the syllabus still fail. Practise with a pen: partition a two-variable domain and mark its points, build a state model and write the 0-switch and 1-switch cases, minimise a decision table and check it with the checksum procedure.
