Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL v4.0) — Chapter 5: Managing the Test Activities

Chapter 5 is the management half of the syllabus: test planning, entry and exit criteria, estimation techniques, test case prioritisation, the test pyramid and testing quadrants, risk management and risk-based testing, test monitoring and control with its metrics and reports, configuration management, and defect management.

Nine of forty points, with three K3 questions — usually an estimate to compute or a risk level to rank. The content is not difficult; the questions are long, and misreading one line of a scenario is the most common avoidable loss on the whole paper.

Where candidates lose these points:

• Risk level combines likelihood and impact — both, always. A high-impact, very unlikely risk can rank below a moderate one, and questions ask you to order several risks, not to define the term.

• Product risk vs project risk — a product risk threatens the quality of the deliverable, a project risk threatens the ability to deliver at all. Late supplier delivery is a project risk even though it hurts testing.

• Three-point estimation — (most optimistic + 4 × most likely + most pessimistic) ÷ 6. Know the formula cold; the arithmetic is the easy part.

• Entry and exit criteria — also called definition of ready and definition of done. Exit criteria are not "all tests passed"; unmet criteria may still be consciously accepted.

• Reports and defect records — a test progress report is written during testing, a test completion report at the end. A defect report documents a failure and what is needed to reproduce it, not a proposed fix.
