Certified Tester Advanced Level Test Management (CTAL-TM v3.0) — Chapter 1: Managing the Test Activities

26 of 50 questions (46 of 88 points) on the real exam78 practice questions available

Managing the Test Activities is the chapter that decides the exam. It supplies 26 of the 50 questions and 46 of the 88 points, and the syllabus puts 750 of its 1365 recommended study minutes here. Six sections sit inside it: the test process reduced to planning, monitoring and control, and completion, mapped onto ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-2; the context of testing; risk-based testing; the project test strategy; improving the test process; and test tools.

Four of the exam's seven K4 objectives live here, and they sit in the areas candidates tend to skim. TM-1.2.7 asks you to reason about scope definition, risk assessment, resource allocation and quality gate management together. TM-1.3.4 puts testing against contingency planning, risk transfer and risk acceptance as ways of handling a product risk, then expects you to sequence execution depth-first or breadth-first and report in terms of residual risk level. TM-1.4.2 covers the seven factors behind the choice of a test approach, and TM-1.6.3 the split between non-recurring, recurring and opportunity costs of a tool.

When you practise this chapter, chase the distinctions rather than the definitions: heavyweight risk techniques such as hazard analysis, FMEA and fault tree analysis against lightweight ones such as SST, PRAM and PRISMA; the five IDEAL phases in order; TMMi with its five maturity levels and process areas against TPI NEXT with its 16 key areas and maturity matrix. Twelve of the 26 questions on the real paper are K3 or K4, so the scenario items matter more than the vocabulary. Our pool holds 78 questions for this chapter.

This chapter is covered most heavily (26 questions) in CTAL-TM — Mock Exam 1 (Risk-Based Testing & Estimation Under Pressure), CTAL-TM — Mock Exam 2 (Process Improvement, Tool ROI & Stakeholder Management), CTAL-TM — Mock Exam 3 (Test Planning, Metrics-Driven Control & Team Development)
