How many questions are on the ISTQB CT-GenAI exam?

40 questions, worth 46 points in total. The scoring is weighted: K1 and K2 questions are worth one point each and K3 questions are worth two, which is why 40 questions produce 46 points.

What is the pass mark for CT-GenAI?

30 of 46 points, which is 65%. Note that this is a points threshold, not a question count — answering 26 of 40 questions correctly does not necessarily reach 30 points, because the six K3 questions carry two points each.

How long is the CT-GenAI exam?

60 minutes. Candidates sitting the exam in a language that is not their native language receive the standard ISTQB allowance of an extra 25%, which gives 75 minutes.

Do I need CTFL before taking CT-GenAI?

Yes. The Certified Tester Foundation Level certificate is a prerequisite for CT-GenAI, and exam providers check it at registration.

Is CT-GenAI the same thing as CT-AI?

No, they are two different exams, and neither is a prerequisite for the other. CT-AI covers testing AI-based systems — data, models, metrics, bias. CT-GenAI covers using generative AI in your own testing work: prompting, risk, LLM-powered tooling and rollout.

Which syllabus version is current?

Version 1.1, in force since 27 April 2026. Version 1.0 was released on 25 July 2025, so material written before spring 2026 may describe the earlier edition.

Does the CT-GenAI certificate expire?

No. Like other ISTQB certificates, it is issued for life and does not require renewal or continuing-education credits.

How are the 40 questions spread across the syllabus?

Seven questions from Chapter 1, 11 from Chapter 2, 10 from Chapter 3, five from Chapter 4 and seven from Chapter 5. Every mock exam on this site follows exactly that distribution.

Which chapter is the most important one to get right?

Chapter 2, Prompt Engineering. It carries 16 of the 46 points from only 11 of the 40 questions, because five of the exam's six K3 questions sit there. Scoring zero in Chapter 2 leaves a maximum of 30 points — exactly the pass mark, with no margin for any other mistake.

How many K3 questions are there, and where are they?

Six, worth two points each, so 12 of the 46 points. Five of them are in Chapter 2 and one is in Chapter 3. The rest of the exam is eight K1 questions and 26 K2 questions.

How much training does the syllabus require?

The syllabus specifies a minimum of 815 minutes — about 13.5 hours — of accredited training. Chapter 2 alone accounts for 365 minutes of that, which matches its weight on the exam.

Can I take the exam online?

ISTQB does not set the delivery format centrally. Exams are booked through a member board or an accredited exam provider, and many of them offer remotely proctored sittings alongside test centres. Check the options when you register.

Are these real exam questions?

No, and you should be wary of any site that says its questions are. Every question here is written from the public syllabus and the official exam structure, with a written rationale on every answer option, including the wrong ones.

How many mock exams should I do before booking?

A practical bar is three full mocks at or above the pass mark, with the per-chapter breakdown showing no chapter consistently below target. All mocks here are free and need no sign-up; an account only exists to keep your attempt history.
